The Ukrainian Antonov Airlines has recently opened an office in Houston, Texas, USA. Antonov Airlines’ new office in the United States has launched cooperation with Orbital ATK, a US-American aerospace company headquartered in Dulles, Virginia. Antonov has already transported the commercial communication satellite Al Yah 3 built by Orbital ATK, as stated in the press release of the Ukrainian state-owned company Antonov.
The air cargo was carried from the largest airport of the Washington metropolitan area – Washington Dulles International Airport, Washington, D.C., to Cayenne, French Guiana, by the aircraft An-124-100 of Antonov Airlines. The cargo aircraft headed back with a new container for Galileo spacecraft in order to further transport satellite equipment.
Antonov Airlines is an air transport branch of the Kyiv-based state-owned company Antonov. The fleet of the airline consists of seven transport aircraft Antonov An-124-100 Ruslan with a payload of 150 tons, the world’s largest aircraft currently in use Antonov An-225 Mriya (English: ‘dream’) with a payload of 250 tons, an Antonov An-74T (payload of 10 tons), an Antonov An-22 Antei (payload of 60 tons) and an multi-purpose aircraft Antonov An-26 (payload of 5.5 tons).
This development has become possible due to the fact that, in 2016, the United States abolished restrictions on the number of annual charter cargo flights to/from the country in connection with the entry into force of the Air Transport Agreement of 2015 between the United States of America and Ukraine, which were applicable to foreign airlines.
In 2017, Antonov Airlines also opened an office in London and appointed general agents for Japan, Australia, and India.
In addition, in November 2016, Antonov Airlines announced plans to establish their own low-cost airline. The company has several passenger aircraft An-148 and An-158. Some of them were previously operated by AeroSvit Airlines and Ukrainian International Airlines. Currently, aircraft are not in operation since restoring their airworthiness requires significant investment.
